Acknowledgements

The following people participated in the research and we are grateful for the contributions they made.

In Malawi - Mr Mike Chibwana, from the Centre for Educational Research and Training, who worked closely with teachers in administering the assessment tasks and developing the profiling system. Mr Shaba, Mr Chandimba and Mr Chatsika, from the Planning Section of the Ministry of Education, in Malawi, who helped to co-ordinate the research project and whose advice on the selection of localities, schools and teachers was very useful. We are also grateful to the 30 teachers from the 10 primary schools in Lilongwe urban and rural districts who participated in the project.

In Sri Lanka - our thanks go to Dr Senereth Nanayakara, at the National Institute for Education, as well as the Director of the Institute and the Sinhala, Tamil and mathematics teams who mediated the project with the participating teachers. Our thanks also go to the Director for Primary Education in the Kurunegala Province in which the research was carried out. We are also grateful for the participation of the 10 schools and 30 teachers in Kurunegala.

We acknowledge the contribution of Maggie Weber, the Research Assistant, who co-ordinated the project and whose tireless efforts made the research possible.
